Footwork Variations, Throwing to 2B
Catching|3minTHE SET UP: The catcher assumes their transition stance (hips on the back of the legs or knee savers, elbows rested on the thighs as if they just gave their sign and are waiting for the pitcher to initiate their pitch) with a coach or partner about 20 feet away, directly in front of them. THE EXECUTION: When the coach or partner lifts their leg to deliver a “pitch” or flip, the catcher assumes their secondary stance. The coach or partner tosses a baseball to different locations around the strike zone (and outside the zone) to the catcher at varying speeds. The catcher quickly exchanges the ball from their receiving hand into their throwing hand while immediately performing the appropriate footwork which is dictated by the pitch location and/or batter location. The variations are as follows: Right-handed batter = Jab step (maintain space from the batter), Left-handed batter = Replace method (to clear some space away from the batter) Pitch outside body frame to throwing arm side = Rock & Fire (Load & Throw) Method, Pitch low and toward the area around the right foot = From the Knees THE PURPOSE: The purpose is for the catcher to improve their footwork quickness and technique utilized during the throwing process. REPS & SETS: I recommend performing 2-3 sets of 10-15 reps depending on what drills/exercises you have done before and what drills and exercises you are going to do after. The catcher does not need to throw during this drill.
